Royal wedding: London travel guide

royal wedding road closures map

The royal wedding on 29 April will draw huge crowds to London but visitors can minimise any travel disruption if they plan ahead.

There are significant road closures which will be in place and several bus routes in central London will be diverted.

Transport for London (TfL) has worked with the Metropolitan Police, the government and Westminster Council to formulate this plan, which aims to allow large crowds to move around central London and enjoy the royal wedding celebrations.

London's Transport Commissioner Peter Hendy said: "All Tube lines will be running and our bus and streets teams will be working flat out to make sure that the closures and diversions needed are managed smoothly."

Roads

The route of the wedding procession between Buckingham Palace and Westminster includes the Mall, Horse Guards Road, Horse Guards Arch, Whitehall and Parliament Square.

The following roads and surrounding areas will be subject to closures and parking restrictions from 0530 BST until 2000 BST:

Tube

The Tube will run a Saturday service during the day, with all stations close to Westminster staying open. There is no planned engineering work on the Tube.

There is ongoing work at Victoria Tube station, so passengers may need to queue to enter the station, and as a general warning, if stations become overcrowded, London Underground may need to close them temporarily.

See the TfL live Tube updates page for the latest information.

London Overground

There will be no service between Watford Junction and Willesden Junction for engineering.

Buses

Many bus routes around Westminster, Hyde Park, Piccadilly and Trafalgar Square will be diverted or stop short because of the road closures.

Transport for London has posted PDF maps for the areas affected (Hyde Park, Piccadilly, Westminster) on their special royal wedding travel web page.

Cycling

Five cycle hire docking stations will be suspended from 2000 BST on 28 April until 2000 BST on 29 April. They are:

  • Northumberland Avenue (The Strand)
  • Whitehall Place (The Strand)
  • Craven Street (The Strand)
  • Horse Guards Avenue
  • Waterloo Place (St James's)
