London police officer dies in motorbike collision

A police officer has died after his motorbike was in collision with a car in south-west London.

Pc Scott Eastwood-Smith, 29, was on his way to work on Saturday when his Suzuki motorcycle and a Toyota Yaris crashed just after 2130 BST.

Paramedics were called to the A316 in Twickenham and he was taken to to St Mary's Hospital where he later died.

His next of kin have been informed and an investigation is under way, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said.

He said Pc Eastwood-Smith, who had been with the Met Police for two years and played in the force's rugby team, had been travelling to work at Chiswick police station.

The spokesman said: "Police were called at 2135 BST on Saturday to reports of a collision between a Toyota Yaris and a Suzuki motorcycle at the junction of the A316 Chertsey Road and Marlow Crescent in Twickenham.

"The London Ambulance Service and police attended.

"The motorcyclist was taken to St Mary's Hospital where he died from his injuries."

A post-mortem examination would be carried out in due course, the spokesman said.

An inquest will open and adjourn at Fulham Coroner's Court on a date to be fixed, he added.

He said the car driver stopped at the scene and was not injured in the collision.
