Phipps Bridge Estate homes without gas in Mitcham

About 500 homes in south London have been without gas for a week.

A water main burst on the Phipps Bridge Estate, Mitcham, on 17 June and the force of the flooding broke a gas pipe.

Southern Gas Networks said it had pumped 200,000 litres of water out of its network and 2,500 households had been reconnected in recent days.

It said it had issued heaters and hot plates to local residents and up to 100 staff from the utility firm were working to resolve the problem.

The latest information about the repair operation has been posted on its website but a date for reconnection has not been set.
