Flood alert issued for south London

A flood alert has been issued for parts of south London as up to 30mm of rain is due to fall in the area.

The Environment Agency has issued the warning for rivers in the boroughs of Lewisham, Bromley, Greenwich and Croydon.

It said rainfall totals of between 10mm to 30mm are possible in thundery downpours in south London, which could lead to river levels rising rapidly.

The warning comes after the capital experienced temperatures of up to 32C.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: "Staff are on 24-hour alert and teams are monitoring river levels as the band of rain moves across the country.

"The public are encouraged to tune in to local media for weather forecasts for, their area and to keep an eye out for signs of surface water flooding."
