Police have begun a murder investigation after a man was shot dead in south London.

The 41-year-old victim was found fatally injured by officers called to a property in Langdale Road, Thornton Heath, at 0243 BST.

He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene, police said.

Appealing for witnesses, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said two suspects had been seen leaving the area on foot in the direction of London Road.

They wore balaclavas and dark clothes.

There were three people in the house at the time of the attack, police said, and a woman in her 50s suffered minor injuries.

She was taken to hospital but has since been discharged.

Police believe they know the dead man's identity but have yet to inform all his next of kin.

A post-mortem examination will be held on Saturday.

'Dreadful attack'

Detectives from Operation Trident, which investigates gun crime in London's black communities, said they were keeping an open mind as to the motive for the killing.

Det Ch Insp John Crossley said: "There will be people who know what has happened and who is responsible for this dreadful attack and would appeal for them to contact us.

"I appreciate that some people might be concerned about reporting gun crime, but we are willing to speak with them in confidence."
