A man has been jailed for a minimum of 26 years for murdering a housemate in south-east London in a row about money.

Maulin Patel, 28, attacked Kartik Patel, who was 23 and not related, at the home they shared in Plumstead.

The victim was hit with a blunt instrument as he slept in January, and died in hospital two days later.

He believed Maulin Patel, who was given a life sentence at Woolwich Crown Court, stole cash from him to spend on gambling websites, Scotland Yard said.

"This was a senseless murder and Maulin Patel told a string of lies to try and cover up his actions," said Acting Dep Ch Insp Graeme Gwyn from the Metropolitan Police.
