Eight people have been arrested in dawn raids in east London by police investigating immigration and a suspected £1m benefit fraud.

Two men and six women, aged between 18 and 48, were arrested at eight addresses in Forest Gate.

About 50 officers from the Metropolitan Police, the UK Border Agency and other agencies took part in the raids.

Among the items seized were fake passports, computers and £1,600 cash.

All those arrested were held on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud, conspiracy to facilitate a breach of immigration law and obtaining benefits and passports by deception.

They remain in police custody pending further investigations.
