Purley Way in Croydon reopens as tyre plant fire burns

About 30 firefighters are continuing to tackle a blaze at a tyre shredding plant in south London.

Smoke from the warehouse fire in Purley Way, Croydon, closed a large section of the A23. This has reopened but an exclusion zone remains in place.

London Fire Brigade said part of the roof has collapsed and parts of the warehouse were still alight.

Three people had left the building before the brigade arrived at about 01:15 BST.

'Massive fire'

Station Manager Mark Blomfield said: "This was a massive fire which caused a huge amount of black smoke due to the number of tyres that were on fire.

"Crews worked incredibly hard throughout the night to prevent the flames from spreading to the two properties either side, one of which is a restaurant.

"We're making steady progress and the fire is reducing in size but the fact that the roof has collapsed has made this a challenging incident.

"We're now working hard to put the fire completely out."

The cause of the fire is not known.
