Upminster fire: Southend Arterial Road plant nursery damaged

Several buildings and part of a wood have been badly damaged by a fire at a garden centre in east London.

Crews from 11 fire engines took more than five hours to extinguish the blaze at the plant nursery on the Southend Arterial Road in Upminster.

A number of single-storey buildings were gutted, London Fire Brigade said.

Vehicles, gas cylinders and fireworks were also wrecked, although "a large number" of the fireworks were taken away from the site by firefighters.

The blaze began at about 14:40 BST on Saturday but crews stayed at the scene during the night to deal with small areas which remained alight.
