An 87-year-old passenger has died after falling over and hitting his head when a bus braked in east London.

Albert Bates, who lived in Walthamstow, was standing on the lower deck of a 158 service travelling along Billet Road, Walthamstow.

He was knocked to the ground when the vehicle came to a halt on 19 September and died four days later, but the case has not previously been publicised.

A man has been arrested over his death and released on bail until January.

Police have appealed to other people who were passengers or passers-by to come forward if they have information.

They said the bus was heading from Chingford to Stratford at about 10:20 BST.

It had just left the Crooked Billet roundabout and had turned on to Billet Road when it braked, they added.
