Elderly woman saved from Rotherhithe tower block fire

An elderly woman has been rescued from her burning flat in the upper reaches of a tower block.

Six fire engines and around 30 firefighters were called to Rotherhithe New Road, Rotherhithe, at about 09:50 GMT.

The fire damaged part of a five-room flat on the thirteenth floor.

Fire crews rescued an elderly woman from the kitchen and she was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

The fire was under control by 10:55 GMT.

Fire crews from Dockhead, Old Kent Road, Deptford, Greenwich, Peckham and New Cross fire stations attended the incident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
