Two suspected thieves held at police Christmas bash
Two suspected thieves were arrested after they walked into a pub in south London where police were holding their Christmas party.
Off-duty officers noticed two men, who appeared to fit the descriptions of suspects wanted for bag thefts, acting suspiciously at The Merchant Pub.
The men, both aged 19, were arrested and bailed for going equipped to steal.
They were held after a spate of thefts in pubs, involving magazines being placed over bags before being stolen.
Ch Insp Charlotte Taylor, of Wandsworth Borough Police, said: "I am delighted that my officers acted in this positive way, particularly at this time of year when this type of crime causes considerable distress to victims.
"Their actions show police officers are never off duty and always willing to intervene when they suspect crimes are being committed."
The men were released on bail until 27 January.
