A 70-year-old man was killed when he was struck by a stolen car after a police pursuit in west London.

Officers said Roberto Da Silva was getting out of his car in Moray Avenue in Hayes, on Tuesday evening, when he was hit and killed by the VW Golf.

Minutes before, officers in a marked police car had abandoned a chase involving the hatchback.

Mr Da Silva died at the scene. The hatchback had been reported stolen in a burglary at the owner's home.

The driver and the passenger, both men, made off on foot following the fatal crash and remain at large, police said.

A post-mortem examination found the cause of Mr Da Silva's death was severe trauma to the spine.

Scotland Yard confirmed the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) and Directorate of Professional Standards have been informed about the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Lawrence, said: "We are keen to speak to anyone in the area who saw the Golf being driven prior to the collision, saw the people responsible running away afterwards or may know who is responsible."
