Riot charge against London teenager dropped

The prosecution has dropped a charge of "riot" against a teenager who was the first person to be charged with the offence after last summer's disorder.

The charge was withdrawn when Jerome Amankwah, 19, of Griffin Road, Tottenham, north London, appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court.

He now faces a charge of violent disorder over the disturbances on High Road in Tottenham on 6 August.

He was remanded in custody and will next appear at the court on 12 March.

A Crown Prosecution Service spokesman said the decision was made based on the evidence required to "provide a realistic prospect of conviction".

He said: "When looking at what charge to pursue we decided that violent disorder was the more appropriate charge in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors."
