Patrolling police officers shot at in Merton

Three police officers patrolling the streets of south London on Tuesday night were shot at by a man who they tried to speak to, the Met Police said.

The shooting happened on Morden Road in Merton at about 20:40 GMT, Scotland Yard said.

The officers were not injured and no arrests have been made.

Police have appealed for anybody who may have witnessed the shooting or who knows anything about it to come forward.

A police spokeswoman said: "As the officers attempted to search the man he produced a firearm and ran off.

"As he ran off he turned and fired one shot in the direction of the officers."

One officer sustained graze injuries when he dropped to the ground as the shot was fired, but did not require hospital treatment.

Detectives from Trident Gang Crime Command are investigating.
