A man has appeared in court charged with killing a pensioner who was hit by a stolen car following a police pursuit in west London.

Roberto Da Silva, 70, was getting out of his car in Murray Avenue, Hayes, when he was struck by a VW Golf.

Minutes before the incident, officers in a marked police car had abandoned a pursuit involving the vehicle.

Felix Fletcher, 39, of Collingwood Road, Hayes, is charged with manslaughter.

He also faces charges of aggravated taking and driving away leading to an accident which caused a death and four counts of burglary.

Westminster magistrates remanded him in custody to next appear at the Old Bailey on 15 June.

Mr Da Silva, a retired mechanical engineer, was getting out of his parked Vauxhall Frontera when he was hit.

A post-mortem examination found he died from a severe trauma to the spine.
