Woolwich murder probe after man shot dead in street

A murder investigation has been launched after a man was shot dead in a street in south-east London.

Marcus Innocent, 35, was pronounced dead in Lord Warwick Street, Woolwich at about 18:20 GMT on Monday.

A post-mortem examination found that he died from a bullet wound to the stomach area.

Detectives from the Trident Gang Crime Command said a group of 15 to 20 people were seen congregating near the scene before the killing.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the group, described as being made up of black and white individuals, had assembled behind a parade of shops in Kingsman Street at the junction with Lord Warwick Street.

'Motive unclear'

It is believed that Mr Innocent, of Kingsman Street, was first attacked by one person in the group and then by more people, then shot, police said.

Some group members ran down Lord Warwick Street towards Frances Street while others got into cars parked in Lord Warwick Street which drove off, the force spokesman said.

Det Ch Insp Chris Le Pere, of the Trident Gang Crime Command, appealed for anyone who saw the shooting or events leading up to it to contact the force.

The motive for the murder is unclear, he said.

Three men have been arrested in connection with the investigation and released on bail, pending further inquiries.
