Overhanging icicles shut New Addington shops

Icicles up to four feet (1.23m) long hanging from guttering led to a parade of shops in south London being closed.

Firefighters went to Central Parade in New Addington after "precarious guttering" and icicles overhanging the pavement outside 30 shops was reported.

A 250m (820ft) section was cordoned off while crews took about an hour-and-a-half making the area safe.

A Brigade spokesman said: "The icicles could have done some serious harm if they'd landed on someone."
