A man who beat a 64-year-old to death while robbing his home has been jailed for 20 years.

Gezim Delija, 39, was involved in the burglary of Edward and Ann Syrad's house in Barnehurst, south-east London.

Mr Syrad died after being bound, gagged and beaten by two men who had threatened him with a gun. His wife Ann, 62, sustained minor injuries.

Delija, of Leyton, east London, was convicted of manslaughter and robbery and sentenced at the Old Bailey.

Police are still trying to identify the second man involved in the "callous and brutal" attack on 25 January, a force spokesperson said.

Mr Syrad, who was known as Ted, died at the scene at his house in Edendale Road.

Post-mortem tests showed he died of numerous blunt trauma injuries and heart failure.

Det Ch Insp Cliff Lyons said Delija "beat Ted to a point that he died from a heart attack".

He added: "He stole a substantial amount of cash which has not been recovered.

"On that night he was with another man.

"Both went armed with tape, balaclavas and a firearm.

"Although we are pleased with today's verdict we still want to identify the second man."
