Police officer critically injured in hit-and-run in Sutton

A 25-year-old man has been arrested

A Metropolitan Police traffic officer has been critically injured in a hit-and-run incident in south London.

Andrew Duncan, who was on foot, tried to stop a car in Sutton at 00:50 BST on Friday but the vehicle struck him.

A 25-year-old male attended a south London police station where he was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury while dangerous driving.

The incident, which involved a black Volkswagen Golf, happened on Reigate Avenue with the junction of Rose Hill.

The vehicle was found abandoned nearby and enquiries are underway to trace the driver.

Courage

The 47-year-old officer and a colleague, another PC, were carrying out speed checks in the area at the time of the hit-and-run.

Commander Dave Martin said: "Andy is a hard working and committed police officer.

"He is extremely popular with everyone he comes into contact with. The thoughts of the MPS (the Met) are with Andy and his family at this distressing time, we are all wishing for his recovery."

The Met's commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, said: "An officer injured on duty is always upsetting for all of us in the Met and our best wishes are with him at this time.

"We will of course ensure that he, his family and his colleagues are being fully supported and a thorough investigation into the incident has already begun.

"Whilst serious injuries on duty are thankfully rare, it is a reminder of the courage of our front-line staff when carrying out their role to keep London safe."

Police are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.
