A manhunt is under way for a patient who absconded from a psychiatric hospital in south-east London after assaulting two members of staff.

Paul Williams, 48, was last seen near Woolwich Arsenal station at about 13:40 GMT on Friday after fleeing from Oxleas House Psychiatric Hospital on Stadium Road, Woolwich about two hours before.

After absconding he assaulted a car driver and stole the vehicle.

He also burgled a home in Caldwell Close in Woolwich, police said.

Officers are warning people not to approach him.

Neither the car driver, who was assaulted in Stadium Road, nor the victim of the burglary needed hospital treatment. The car has since been abandoned.

Mr Williams is described as a bald black man, about 6ft 3ins tall and of large build. He speaks with an American accent.

He was last seen wearing a black top with black shorts and white trainers and was carrying a maroon suitcase.
