Four 'chase and hold armed bank robber' in Petts Wood

Four people chased and held an armed man who was attempting to rob a bank in south-east London.

The Met said officers arrived at a bank in Station Square, Petts Wood, just after 14:00 GMT to find four members of the public holding a suspect.

A firearm was found at the scene, although it has not been tested yet to find out if it is real or a replica.

Bromley borough commander, Ch Supt Chris Hafford, praised the bravery of those who helped to detain the man.

"Whilst it is still extremely early in the investigation, it appears that the members of the public have put themselves in some danger in order to detain somebody they believe has been involved in a very dangerous and serious crime.

"This will now be investigated by detectives from the Flying Squad, who are specialists in investigating armed robbery, but whatever the outcome, I would like to praise the bravery of those who helped detain the man until my officers were able to arrive and arrest him."

He added he would not recommend the public tackle anyone that could be armed but instead make a note of their description and clothing and wait for police officers to arrive.

The suspect has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and remains in custody at a south London station.
