Woman dies in Hendon hit-and-run collision

A woman in her 40s has died after being knocked down by a Mercedes car in a hit-and-run in north London.

Police were called to the scene on the A5 in West Hendon, just before 06:00 GMT.

The woman, who has not been named, was taken to a north London hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The Metropolitan Police said the car involved, thought to be a silver Mercedes, failed to stop and continued north-bound.

Det Stephen Pidgeon said no arrests have been made and a post-mortem examination is due to be held.

He said the car is thought to have sustained damage to the front and appealed for witnesses.

"I would also like to appeal to the driver of the vehicle, please do the right thing and hand yourself into police at the earliest opportunity," he said.

Local road closures are in place and motorists are advised to find alternative routes.
