Homes evacuated after Rochdale garage fire

Eighty people were forced to spend the night away from their homes after potentially explosive gas cylinders were found at a fire in Rochdale.

Police were called by the fire service after they found acetylene cylinders at a garage on Count Street just before 1600 BST on Saturday afternoon.

A 200m cordon was put in place around the scene and about 80 residents were moved to emergency accommodation.

The cordon was reduced on Sunday and some people were allowed home.

Police hoped the situation would return to normal after a further safety inspection.
