A 21-year-old man has been jailed for stabbing a teenager to death at a party in Manchester city centre.

Hashim Us Salaam, of Werneth Street in Oldham, stabbed Zhen Asghar, 18, at a flat in Dantzic Street last September.

Salaam admitted manslaughter at an earlier hearing. On Thursday, at Manchester Crown Court he was jailed for five years and three months.

Police said trouble broke out when two groups of men celebrated the Muslim festival of Eid at hired flats.

They said the two groups had not known each other before the night of 21 September.

Mr Ashgar, of Mallowdale Crescent in Bolton, died from a single stab wound to his thigh two days later.

Det Ch Insp Jon Chadwick, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "It is a tragedy that a night which should have been memorable for all the right reasons resulted in the loss of a young life like this.

"No sentence could ever make up for what Zhen's family have suffered but I hope today provides them with some comfort."
