Women critical after suspected arson at Salford flats

Two women are in a critical condition in hospital following a suspected arson attack in Salford.

Emergency services were called to the fire at a block of flats on Browfield Avenue, Ordsall, on Sunday evening.

Four people were rescued and the building was evacuated while firefighters tackled the flames.

A joint investigation between the police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is under way.

Greater Manchester Police said a number of people were taken to hospital for treatment. Two of them remain in a critical but stable condition.

Det Sgt Julie Connor said: "We are treating this fire as suspicious and I would urge anyone with any information whatsoever to contact us.

"All information will be treated in strict confidence."
