Woman raped in Manchester park

Police are looking through CCTV footage in a bid to identify a rapist who struck in a Manchester park.

The 44-year-old victim alerted police from a phone box on Birchfields Road, Rusholme, in a distressed state.

When officers arrived they found she had been attacked and raped in Birchfields Park. She was taken to hospital for treatment.

Greater Manchester Police said the attack was not being linked to any other incident in the area.

The woman had been standing at the park gates at about 0600 BST on Friday when she remembers being pushed over and dragged along the ground.

'Nasty attack'

She was then raped and has described seeing headlights.

Detectives have no description of the man but are examining CCTV from the area in a bid to identify him.

Det Insp Terry Crompton, of Longsight CID, said: "This was a very nasty attack and the victim is currently being spoken to and supported by specially-trained officers.

"This investigation is at an early stage and this rape is not being linked to any other rape or sexual assault in the area.

"We are determined to catch this offender and are doing all we can, but we still need people's help."

Anyone who was out early in the morning near the park, such as dog walkers or joggers, is urged to contact police.
