Thief steals car in Wigan with children inside

Two children jumped out of a moving car in Greater Manchester after it was stolen while they were in the back.

A man dressed in dark clothing stole the red BMW from outside their home in Footman Close, Astley, in Wigan, at about 0710 GMT, police said.

A boy, aged eight, and a six-year-old girl jumped out shortly after it was stolen, suffering bumps and bruises.

The car, registration number C17 YMH, was abandoned off King William Street, Tyldesley.

Det Con Linda Howcroft, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "The family are understandably very upset by what has happened and while we have now recovered the car we have a lot more work to do.

"I want to know who stole it, so if you saw the car being abandoned or driven around at any point between the time it was taken and the time it was found please get in touch.

"Today's incident proves it only takes a second for an opportunist car thief to strike so I would reiterate how important it is to never leave you car unlocked and certainly never leave your keys in the ignition even for a split second."
