Leigh head wound death man named by police

A man who died after he was punched and fell to the ground in Greater Manchester has been named by police.

Stephen Garvey, 46, from Leigh, died in hospital after he was found collapsed in Henry Street, at about 0240 GMT on Sunday.

He had been drinking at the Waterside Pub on Saturday evening after attending the Wigan vs Manchester United match at the DW Stadium.

A witness saw someone deliver a single punch to his head.

Police believe that Mr Garvey then struck his head as he fell to the ground.

A post-mortem examination concluded that he died from head injuries.

Det Ch Insp Jon Chadwick said: "Such a sad end to what is very much a normal Saturday is a tragedy and we have been working tirelessly since Stephen was found to try and piece together exactly what happened to him.

"We believe Stephen was attacked before he fell to the ground so it is important that we speak to everyone who saw him before he was found.
