Youth arrested over man's murder in Leigh

A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a man who died after he was punched and fell to the ground in Greater Manchester.

Stephen Garvey, 46, was found collapsed in Henry Street, Leigh, in the early hours of Sunday. He was taken to hospital but died soon afterwards.

Police said he had been out drinking after attending the Wigan v Manchester United match on Saturday.

A 17-year-old youth has been arrested and is being questioned by police.

'Sad end'

Detectives have said a witness saw someone punch Mr Garvey before he fell to the ground, hitting his head.

Police were called to the scene at about 0240 GMT following reports a man had been found collapsed in the street.

A post-mortem examination found he died from head injuries.

Det Ch Insp Jon Chadwick, from Greater Manchester Police's Major Incident Team, said: "Such a sad end to what was very much a normal Saturday is a tragedy and we have been working tirelessly since Stephen was found to try and piece together exactly what happened to him.

"We believe Stephen was attacked before he fell to the ground so it is important that we speak to everyone who saw him before he was found.

"If you saw or know something that could help our investigation, please contact my officers."
