The victim was walking home from a pub along Langworthy Road with the gunman at 1210 GMT, when he produced his firearm and threatened him with it.

A 22-year-old man is being held on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear.

He is being questioned by police, who said that their inquiries are ongoing and that witnesses should come forward.

'Reassure residents'

Det Sgt Del Scholfield said: "This is an excellent result.

"Officers acted quickly and decisively to deploy armed officers to the scene and made a rapid arrest.

"In making the arrest officers have also taken a deadly weapon off the streets of Salford.

"I hope this action reassures residents that we take all reports of firearms extremely seriously and will use whatever powers at our disposal to take them out of circulation."
