Police investigating the death of a woman whose body was discovered after a fire at a house in Manchester say they are treating it as "unexplained".

Officers were called to a property in Grandale Street, Rusholme, at about 1410 BST on Tuesday and found the woman, believed to be in her late 40s.

Police have started an investigation. Post-mortem tests are due to be carried out on Wednesday afternoon.

Grandale Street, off Wilmslow Road, remains closed to traffic.

Supt Stuart Barton said: "I must stress this inquiry is at a very early stage and we still do not know how the woman died or what started the fire.

"We have a dedicated team of detectives from our major incident team investigating and while I understand there will be some concern in the community I would ask local residents not to be unduly worried.

"If you have any concerns please speak to one of the extra neighbourhood officers who will be in the area."
