Three men have been arrested after a man was found lying near a school in Bolton with serious facial injuries.

The man, thought to be in his 40s, was found unconscious by a member of the public in Devon Street, Farnworth, at 0520 BST. He died later in hospital.

Police have closed Devon Street for forensic investigations. Nearby All Saints Primary School has been closed.

The arrested men, aged 21, 20 and 23, were detained by police nearby. Investigations are continuing.

Motive unclear

Supt Paul Rumney said officers were working to establish the circumstances leading to the man's death.

"As yet, we have not identified the victim so it would not be helpful or appropriate to speculate about motive.

"However, I do want to reassure people living in this community who may be concerned that we have made arrests and we will have a large number of officers and PCSOs in the area over the weekend.

"These officers will be there to reassure residents and explain what is going on but also so that if anyone does have information about what happened, they can approach officers and tell them what they know, in confidence if needed."

House-to-house inquiries will be carried out throughout the day in a bid to find witnesses.

A post-mortem investigation is due to be carried out later.
