The family of a man who was killed when his car crashed into a wall in Greater Manchester, shortly after being pursued by police, have paid tribute to him.

The Volkswagen Golf crashed into a garden wall in Windsor Road, Hyde just before 0200 BST on Monday.

An officer started pursuing the car in Stockport but he lost sight of it before it crashed.

Robert Stansfield, a 24-year-old pipe fitter from Hyde, was described by his family as a "fine young man".

In a statement, they said: "Robert was an incredibly popular boy and he will be sorely missed by all of his family and all of his friends.

"We as a family are unable to explain the loss that his death has caused us at this stage.

"He was developing into a fine young man and his death will affect a lot of people who thought the world of him."

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has started an investigation into the incident, after it was referred by Greater Manchester Police.
