Computer error to delay benefits in East Cheshire

About 15,000 people in Cheshire will not receive their housing benefit on time due to council computer problems.

Staff at Cheshire East Council were unable to send out the £4m worth of payments last Thursday.

The money was supposed to reach bank accounts on Tuesday but the council said it may not be paid until Friday.

Lisa Quinn, borough treasurer for the council, said it would refund any bank charges incurred by recipients because of the late payment.

"We are trying to make sure that all of our systems are sorted out and that payment can be made and that problems can be resolved as quickly as possible," she said.

"We will provide any help that we can and we will make sure that people aren't in difficulty because of this situation.

"On Tuesday people will be able to phone us and find out information.

"We are also trying to contact landlords and housing associations so that people are fully aware and don't raise the alarm and make it difficult for individuals that receive benefit."
