CCTV images of the moment a hit-and-run driver struck a man, leaving him critically injured, have been released by police in Greater Manchester.

Dale O'Malley is seen being thrown into the air by the car and landing on the road in Stockport town centre.

The 28-year-old's family asked for the release of the pictures in a bid to trace the driver.

Mr O'Malley, from Offerton, suffered head injuries and remains in a critical condition in Salford Royal hospital.

Car damaged

Greater Manchester Police said he was crossing the road near McDonald's on Wellington Road South at about 2305 BST on Sunday when he was hit by the silver or grey Peugeot 206.

He suffered a broken leg, broken arm and head injuries in the impact, which also left the car with damage to the front nearside and a smashed windscreen.

Insp Susan Redfern said: "The images of the collision are quite upsetting to look at, but I make no apologies for making them public.

"The family asked us to publicise them in an effort to provoke a reaction.

"They want the driver, or anyone who thinks they might know the driver, to come forward and speak to police.

"They are extremely distraught about what happened to Dale and asked us to do all we could to get to the bottom of what happened."

Anyone with information about the collision, or the driver, should contact police.

They also want to hear from any mechanics who have been asked to repair a similar car.
