Son who admits killing mother sentenced to Ashworth
A Salford man who admitted killing his mother in a frenzied hammer and knife attack has been detained indefinitely at a high-security hospital.
Lee Hayes, 57, of Littleton Road, pleaded guilty at Manchester Crown Court to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility.
Hayes, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, killed Elsie Hayes, 78, at their shared home on 10 July 2010.
He is being held and treated at Ashworth Secure Hospital in Merseyside.
Hayes appeared by video link and told the court that he phoned police after the attack to confess that he had mutilated his mother's body and killed her.
He said he told officers that a voice in his head spoke to him as he carried out the attack.
The court heard that Hayes immediately tried to commit suicide and mutilated himself.
