Wigan's Uncle Joe's Mint Balls boss appointed MBE

The managing director of the Wigan sweet firm which produces Uncle Joe's Mint Balls has been appointed MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

John Winnard, joint managing director of William Santus and Co, said it was great to be recognised with the honour.

He volunteers as a mentor in local schools, giving advice on setting up and running small businesses.

The first Mint Ball was made 113 years ago by Ellen Santus in the kitchen of her home on Acton Street, Wigan.

Mr Winnard is her great-great nephew.

He became a member of the Government's International Trade Development advisory panel after successfully exporting the company brand.

He said: "It's great to be recognised. I think it is important in business that you are prepared to share your experience and hopefully inspire someone else to take up a challenge and be successful.

"I think you have to spend time giving something back to the communities which have been loyal to you. I enjoy it."
