Manchester school guard hurt in 'shocking' attack

A school security guard suffered serious head injuries and a fractured hip when he was attacked by robbers at a school in Manchester.

The gang attacked the 57-year-old from behind at 0250 BST on Friday at St Matthew's RC School on Nuthurst Road, Moston.

They made off in his Peugeot 206, which was discovered abandoned in Factory Lane, Harpurhey.

Police described the attack as "shocking and unnecessary".

'Ambushed and outnumbered'

Police found the man drifting in and out of consciousness after the alarm was set off. The gang had put him in a headlock and kicked him to the ground and punched him.

Pc Jonathan McPherson said: "The man was ambushed and outnumbered by the offenders who subjected him to shocking and unnecessary levels of violence.

"Someone will know who is responsible and I would urge them to think about how serious this offence is and do the right thing and come forward."

The victim was able to describe one offender as being 6ft tall, aged between 16 and 20, well built and wearing a horizontal striped top.
