Girl sexually assaulted by Rochdale Canal

A 12-year-old girl has been sexually assaulted by a man who passed her on a bike on a canal towpath in Greater Manchester.

The girl was walking along the Rochdale Canal by Brown Lodge Street at 2100 BST on 28 June when the man passed her and then turned round to follow her.

He rugby-tackled her and tried to pull her leggings down before she screamed and he ran off.

Police said the girl had been left "traumatised" by the attack.

He is described as white, aged in his mid-20s and 5ft 7ins tall with brown eyes, short brown hair and a slim pale face.

He was wearing light blue jeans, a white hooded top and white trainers and was riding a black mountain bike.

Det Con David Read said: "The victim has been left traumatised by her ordeal but has shown bravery in reporting the incident and helping us put together a detailed description of the man.

"I would urge anyone in the area who saw the incident or recognise the description to contact us.

"I would also ask people to be with a group of friends if they have to walk in remote areas, never be on your own.

"Be aware of your surroundings and be aware of other people who may be in the area."
