A convicted murderer has been jailed for life for sexually abusing 11 children over a period of 40 years.

David Richard Taylor, from Benchill, was found guilty of 27 offences including rape, attempted rape and indecent assault.

Taylor, 66, had previously served 12 years for deliberately hitting a man with his car in 1987.

He was sentenced to eight concurrent life sentences at Manchester Crown Court.

Taylor abused boys and girls aged between five and 13.

'Emotional destruction'

The investigation into the abuse began with his arrest in November 2009, after two girls aged between 13 and 10 reported being sexually assaulted by Taylor.

He was charged with these offences and, during the course of the subsequent inquiry, police uncovered a history of abuse dating back to 1972.

Det Con Emma Wilkinson said: "Taylor is an evil man who has consistently preyed on children throughout most of his adult life.

"He has left a trail of emotional destruction in his wake and no sentence will ever completely heal the wounds he has caused.

"However, the victims and his families can now at least be reassured that this man cannot physically hurt anyone else."

Taylor will not be eligible for parole for 12 years.
