Man attacked in Preston by up to 20 men

A 28-year-old man has been battered with bats and clubs by a group of up to 20 men in Preston.

The man was attacked in the Caroline Street and Maitland Street area of the city at about 23:45 BST on Thursday, Lancashire police said.

He suffered serious head injuries and was due to undergo surgery at the Royal Preston Hospital.

The attackers had their faces covered and were wearing balaclavas and dark clothing. They were on bikes.

'Be vigilant'

They fled towards New Hall Lane.

Det Insp Warren Atkinson said: "This was a vicious attack and I would appeal to anybody who witnessed it or who has any information about it to contact police.

"I would also urge members of the public to be vigilant and if they come across any discarded weapons then I would ask them to come forward.

"This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated and anyone found to have been involved in this kind of criminality will be robustly dealt with."
