The 20-year-old was discovered with wounds to his neck in Talbot Road, Hyde at about 0730 BST on Sunday.
He had called for an ambulance as he went into the street after the attack and was found by a passer-by.
He remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital, Greater Manchester Police said.
