The family of an 87-year-old man who died after he was struck by a van in Greater Manchester have paid tribute to "a proud and dedicated family man".

Alexander Fantom was on Lancashire Hill in Stockport when he was hit by the vehicle on Monday afternoon.

Mr Fantom, a great grandfather from Stockport, was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital but died later that day.

His family said: "His loss cannot truly be put into words and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him."

They added: "He was bright, intelligent, organised and played a central and integral role in the community he lived in."

"He was a fighter and kept bouncing back from what life threw at him. For him to be taken away from us in these circumstances is so tragic and unexpected."

Police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.
