Armed robber stopped by public in Heaton Moor

An armed robber was dragged from his motorbike and detained by members of the public after a raid on a post office in Greater Manchester.

Police were called to Heaton Moor post office at around 10:00 BST after reports a masked man had threatened staff with a handgun.

He tried to flee on a motorbike with a large amount of cash, but was followed by members of the public who dragged him from his vehicle and disarmed him.

Police have praised their bravery.

Det Insp Michael Fenton said: "While we do not encourage members of the public to put themselves at risk in these circumstances, I have personally spoken to and thanked one of the witnesses who detained the offender.

"They all acted extremely bravely, giving no thought to their own safety to detain an armed and clearly dangerous male."

A man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery.
