A man thought to be chasing a thief was critically injured when he was hit by a bus in central Manchester, police have said.

The man was struck by the bus in Oxford Road, near the junction with Chester Street, at about 23:30 BST on Saturday. He suffered serious head injuries.

As the bus driver went to his aid, two women told him they thought he had been the victim of a theft moments before.

They said he may have been pursuing a cyclist who had taken his mobile phone.

'Vital information'

Det Sgt Shagufta Khan, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "A young man has been left fighting for his life so we really need to speak to these two women.

"We have had no other reports of a theft so we need to ask them exactly what they saw.

"If you approached the bus driver last night we want to know exactly what you told him - your information could be vital to this inquiry.

"I also want to hear from anyone who was in that area at the time."
