Body of man recovered from River Mersey

The body of a man has been recovered from the River Mersey, after being spotted by walkers in south Liverpool.

A man and a woman walking along Otterspool Promenade spotted a body in the water at about 14:15 BST and alerted police.

With the help of the fire service, paramedics and the coastguard, the body of a man thought to be in his 40s or 50s was recovered near the Pier Head.

Merseyside Police said the man's death was being treated as unexplained.

An investigation is under way and the coroner has been informed, a spokesman said.

Officers are trying to establish the man's identity. He was wearing a red and black Adidas jacket, blue Inter Milan shirt, dark trousers and white Reebok trainers.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Merseyside Police.
