An armed robber who confessed to police over the phone has been jailed.

Stephen Meakin, 26, of no fixed abode, called police on 6 February to admit to the robbery at Bargain Booze in Accrington the previous day.

Meakin pleaded guilty to threatening a 22-year-old shop assistant with a knife and stealing hundreds of pounds.

He also pleaded guilty to possessing an article with a blade and was jailed for four years and six months at Burnley Crown Court on Friday.

His accomplice, Daniel McGrath, 27, of Whalley Road, Accrington, was sentenced to three years and six months.

Det Sgt Paul Langley, of Lancashire Police, said: "It is very unusual to receive a phone call confession from an offender.

"Clearly Meakin was feeling some kind of remorse for what he had done."
