Boy badly injured in Salford police van crash

A 13-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a police van in Salford, Greater Manchester.

The boy suffered a serious head injury in the collision at about 18:20 BST on Saturday in Chorley Road, Swinton.

Greater Manchester Police said the van had been responding to an incident.

The officer who was driving the van has been suspended from driving duties while inquiries are carried out, GMP said.

The force's Professional Standards Branch has referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

The IPCC has appealed for witness to the crash.

An IPCC spokesperson said: "Our thoughts are with the young boy and we all hope he makes a quick and full recovery.

"Our investigation has now begun and will be overseeing a full collision scene analysis as well as viewing CCTV footage of the incident but we also need the help of the public."

Assistant Chief Constable Ian Wiggett said: "Our thoughts are with the family of this little boy and we are devastated that while responding to try and help one person, another has been injured.

"We are carrying out a full investigation into the circumstances of the collision so we can establish exactly what happened."
