Oldham Council introduces free Saturday parking

People shopping in Oldham town centre can park free every Saturday as part of Oldham Council's bid to boost trade.

The council is spending £78,000 to subsidise the first three hours of shoppers' stays every Saturday until the New Year.

More than 1,500 spaces are available at 12 locations, including the civic centre, sports centre and Tommyfield Market.

The council said it hoped to make shopping easier and cheaper.

Council leader Jim McMahon (Lab) said: "We've already had some really positive feedback from both town centre traders and shoppers since this initiative was announced.

"We're launching this scheme very early in order to give Oldham a quick competitive edge as we enter the run-up to the Festive shopping period."
